Asphalt

Polyphosphoric acid (PPA) is a proven modifier that improves the properties of asphalt binder. It has been used successfully for over 40 years and is now broadly used, either as a standalone modifier or in combination with various polymers.

The benefits of PPA are demonstrated in conventional and Superpave™ testing procedures, as well as in the new Multiple Stress Creep Recovery (MSCR) tests. ICL Advanced Additives offers PPA in a variety of concentrations. Most widely used are 105 and 115%. Both perform similarly, with 105% providing a lower viscosity option, and 115% a more concentrated and more viscous versions. Which is chosen depends on the customer’s preferences and plant design.

ICL offers a complete package: In addition to the various grades available, we offer a broad variety of packaging options including drums, totes, and bulk. We also offer engineering and formulation support and— as part of long-term contract arrangements— our state-of-the-art PADS® units (Polyphosphoric Acid Delivery Systems). PADS units are designed for handling bulk shipments. PADS II® units have been flexibly designed to handle drums or totes, and are intended for start-up and smaller volume users.

Polyphosphoric Acid Benefits

Cost Effective Asphalt Binder Modifier:

  • Low dosage (typically less than 1%)
  • Bulk delivery and on-site storage option
  • Performance
  • Disperses and stabilizes asphaltenes
  • Expands UTI (increased DSR without effecting BBR results)
  • Compatible with polymer additives
  • Moisture resistance enhancement
  • Modified Asphalt Manufacturing
  • Liquid for easy injection and metering
  • Fast reaction—reacts instantly to eliminate long blending times
  • Easily adjustable—can be added multiple times
